I highly recommend the first two books are examined first, or one might experience a morosely unpleasant flush of amnesia in far too many places. Despite the considerable manpower and heavy hardware the UDF throws at the enemy, the Normandy beaches are littered with human detritus. More to the point, my concentration ability isn’t what it was prior to cancer. Reading this book was no small undertaking due to the book’s subject matter, detail and length. This book is for anyone wanting to understand more about the secrets of DNA and how the science of genetics came to be. However, this book is not just for those impacted by hereditary illnesses. I decided sharing a few thoughts about The Gene would be especially fitting with HBOC (Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer) Week coming up next week. The Gene will be presented as a three-hour Ken Burns – Siddhartha Mukherjee collaborated documentary film on PBS as well in spring of 2020. ![]() The book and the documentary are both very well done. You can read my review of that four-part television series here. The latter was made into a PBS documentary. Most of us in Cancer Land are familiar with Mukherjee’s acclaimed 2011 Pulitzer prize-winning book, The Emperor of All Maladies. ![]() Recently, I finished reading The Gene: An Intimate History by Siddhartha Mukherjee, MD. ![]() 6/27/2023 0 Comments Kaikeyi paperback![]() ![]() Kaikeyi must decide if resistance is worth the destruction it will wreak-and what legacy she intends to leave behind. With this power, Kaikeyi transforms herself from an overlooked princess into a warrior, diplomat, and most favored queen, determined to carve a better world for herself and the women around her.īut as the evil from her childhood tales threatens the cosmic order, the path she has forged clashes with the destiny the gods have chosen for her family. And when she calls upon the gods for help, they never seem to hear.ĭesperate for some measure of independence, she turns to the texts she once read with her mother and discovers a magic that is hers alone. Yet she watches as her father unceremoniously banishes her mother, listens as her own worth is reduced to how great a marriage alliance she can secure. The only daughter of the kingdom of Kekaya, she is raised on legends of the gods: how they churned the vast ocean to obtain the nectar of immortality, how they vanquish evil and ensure the land of Bharat prospers, and how they offer powerful boons to the devout and the wise. I was born on the full moon under an auspicious constellation, the holiest of positions-much good it did me. “With a graceful, measured elegance” ( New York Times), this lyrical novel reimagines the life of the infamous queen from the ancient epic the Ramayana, giving voice to an extraordinary woman determined to leave her mark in a world where gods and men dictate the shape of things to come. ![]() 6/27/2023 0 Comments In the Blood by Steve Robinson![]() ![]() His voices for all of the British characters were great but his voice for Tayte and the few other Americans were not good for me. I did not like the voice he gave to Jefferson Tayte at all. ![]() I understand the choice of a British reader since the whole book (minus the very beginning) takes place in England, but it just threw me off because the main character is American and while the book is not a first person narrative, it still put me off-kilter a bit. As far as the performance went, as much as I like Simon Vance's voice, I had a difficult time with him reading this book. I found myself yelling at him those times. He didn't draw much emotion from me at all, except frustration several times when I thought he did some things and made some choices that weren't smart. I didn't hate him, but I didn't like him either. I never really got to like him very much. However, I had trouble connecting with Jefferson Tayte. I really enjoyed how there were scenes both in the present day and in the last. Maybe I set my expectations too high? The mystery itself was intriguing and had several layers which was a plus. ![]() I had very high hopes for this book as I am a huge fan of the Dan Waddell series featuring genealogist Nigel Barnes and was looking for something similar. ![]() 6/27/2023 0 Comments The will to change by bell hooks![]() Although after a first read I have pages of notes citing problems with various points of reasoning Hooks made throughout, including a few I would consider major. A brave and astonishing work, The Will to Change is designed to help men reclaim the best part of themselves. She believes men can find the way to spiritual unity by getting back in touch with the emotionally open part of themselves - and lay claim to the rich and rewarding inner lives that have historically been the exclusive province of women. ![]() With trademark candor and fierce intelligence, hooks addresses the most common concerns of men, such as fear of intimacy and loss of their patriarchal place in society, in new and challenging ways. In The Will to Change, bell hooks gets to the heart of the matter and shows men how to express the emotions that are a fundamental part of who they are - whatever their age, marital status, ethnicity, or sexual orientation.īut toxic masculinity punishes those fundamental emotions, and it’s so deeply ingrained in our society that it’s hard for men to not comply - but hooks wants to help change that. ![]() But to know love, men must be able to look at the ways that patriarchal culture keeps them from knowing themselves, from being in touch with their feelings, from loving. Everyone needs to love and be loved - even men. ![]() |
